A sequencer is responsible for sending transactions made on the secondary layer (Metis) to the main layer (Ethereum).
Why does decentralizing the sequencer matter?

On June 2, 2024, a hacker exploited vulnerabilities in the Velocore DEX on the Linea network, stealing over
700 ETH ($2.6 million). Linea, like most Layer 2 solutions with a centralized sequencer, temporarily halted block production and censored the hacker’s wallet.
While this intervention had a positive outcome, it highlights the risk of centralized control, which could be used for suppression and censorship in the future. This can't happen with Metis, thanks to its fully decentralized sequencer.
